UK Business Certifications & Accreditations

Last updated: May 2026 Β· 7 min read

Displaying the right accreditations builds customer trust, unlocks regulated markets, and in some cases is a legal requirement. This guide explains the most important UK business certifications and how to show them on your Yolist profile.

Food Hygiene Ratings (FSA)

The Food Hygiene Rating Scheme (FHRS) is run by the Food Standards Agency in partnership with local councils. Any business that handles food β€” restaurants, cafes, takeaways, caterers, hotels, pubs, childminders preparing food, and many retailers β€” can receive a rating.

Ratings at a glance

RatingMeaningDisplay colour
5 β€” Very GoodHighest standard of hygiene and complianceGreen
4 β€” GoodGood hygiene, minor improvements possibleLight green
3 β€” Generally SatisfactorySome improvement requiredYellow
2 β€” Improvement NecessarySignificant improvement neededOrange
1 β€” Major Improvement NecessaryMajor non-compliance; urgent action requiredRed
0 β€” Urgent Improvement NecessaryImmediate risk to public healthRed
ExemptLow-risk business type (e.g., childminder, B&B with <3 rooms)Grey

In Wales it is a legal requirement to display your rating sticker. In England it is voluntary, but legislation to make it mandatory is under discussion. Displaying a 5-star rating prominently β€” online and in-premises β€” is free marketing.

Gas Safe Register (Mandatory for Gas Work)

The Gas Safe Register is the official gas registration body for the UK, Isle of Man, and Guernsey. Since April 2009 it replaced CORGI as the mandatory register for all businesses and self-employed engineers carrying out gas work.

  • Registration is mandatory β€” it is illegal to carry out gas work without it.
  • Each engineer carries a Gas Safe ID card showing exactly what work they are qualified to carry out.
  • Homeowners can check a register number at gassaferegister.co.uk.
  • Annual renewal is required; lapsed registration means the engineer cannot legally work.

NICEIC / NAPIT (Electrical)

Electrical installation work notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations must be carried out by a competent person scheme member, or the work must be inspected and certified by Building Control.

  • NICEIC(National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting) β€” the UK's leading voluntary body for electrical contractors. Approved contractors are assessed against British Standard BS 7671.
  • NAPIT β€” covers electrical, plumbing, and gas competence schemes. NAPIT-registered contractors can self-certify notifiable work.
  • ELECSA β€” part of NICEIC Group; focuses on domestic installation work.

Electrical contractors displaying NICEIC or NAPIT badges signal to consumers that their work meets the current Wiring Regulations and is fully insured and certified.

Trading Standards β€” Buy With Confidence

The Buy With Confidence scheme is run by Local Authority Trading Standards Services across England and Wales. Approval requires:

  • Criminal records check
  • Compliance with consumer protection legislation
  • Satisfactory customer references and complaints history
  • Ongoing monitoring and spot checks

The scheme is especially valuable for tradespeople (builders, roofers, locksmiths) where rogue trader activity is common.

ISO 9001 / ISO 27001

ISO 9001:2015(Quality Management System) is the world's most widely recognised quality standard. It demonstrates that a business has documented, consistent processes for delivering products and services to customer requirements.

ISO 27001:2022 (Information Security Management) is essential for any business handling sensitive personal or commercial data. It is increasingly required by NHS, government, and enterprise procurement frameworks.

  • Certification is carried out by UKAS-accredited certification bodies.
  • Typical cost: Β£2,000–£10,000 for initial certification plus annual surveillance audits.
  • Many public-sector and enterprise contracts require ISO 9001 or ISO 27001 as a minimum.

FCA Authorisation (Financial Services)

Businesses providing regulated financial activities β€” including credit broking, debt management, insurance distribution, investment advice, and payment services β€” must be authorised or registered with the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).

  • Check a firm's status on the FCA register.
  • Acting without FCA authorisation is a criminal offence under the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000.
  • Appointed Representatives can carry out regulated activity under the umbrella of an Authorised Firm.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be Gas Safe registered to do gas work in the UK?
Yes. Under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998, all gas work must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. It is illegal to undertake gas work without registration, and the penalty for individuals is up to six months in prison or a Β£20,000 fine.
What does a 5-star FSA food hygiene rating mean?
A 5-star (Very Good) rating from the Food Standards Agency means the business received the highest possible score across food hygiene and safety, structural compliance, and management of food safety. Ratings are awarded by local authority Environmental Health Officers following an unannounced inspection.
Is ISO 9001 certification mandatory for UK businesses?
No. ISO 9001 (Quality Management System) is voluntary, but many public-sector contracts and large buyers require suppliers to hold it. Certification demonstrates a systematic approach to quality, customer satisfaction, and continual improvement.
How do I display my certifications on my Yolist profile?
Claim your business listing on Yolist, then go to your dashboard β†’ Profile β†’ Accreditations. You can add your Gas Safe number, FSA rating (auto-synced from the national register), NICEIC/NAPIT registration, and any other certifications. They will be displayed as trust badges on your public profile.
