How to find a reliable removal company in the UK

4 min read

A practical guide to finding and comparing UK removal companies — what to check, typical costs, and how to protect your belongings.

BAR membership and insurance

The British Association of Removers (BAR) is the primary trade body for UK removal companies. BAR members are required to hold goods-in-transit insurance covering the full replacement value of your possessions, carry public liability insurance, operate purpose-built vehicles, and adhere to a code of practice. Verify BAR membership at bar.co.uk.

Goods-in-transit insurance is the most critical insurance requirement. Ask any removal company: what is the goods-in-transit coverage level, and what is the claims procedure? A reputable company covers the full replacement value of your goods (not depreciated value). Some companies offer additional contents insurance add-ons — useful for high-value items not covered under standard policy limits.

Not all good removal companies are BAR members, but BAR membership provides a dispute resolution scheme if things go wrong. Non-BAR companies rely on the Consumer Rights Act and small claims court for dispute resolution, which is slower and more stressful.

Getting accurate quotes

Removal costs in England (2025–26): local move within a city (2-bed flat, standard loading, one day) £400–£800; long-distance move (400+ miles, 3-bed house) £1,200–£2,500; standard packing service add-on £150–£500 depending on volume. Storage (per week, 250 cubic feet unit) £20–£50 plus VAT.

Always request a home survey (in-person or video) rather than accepting a phone or email quote. An accurate survey eliminates the risk of a significantly higher invoice on the day due to "additional items". Any reputable removal company will arrange a free survey before quoting. Compare at least three surveys and quotes — price variation between companies for identical jobs can be 40–70%.

Ask specifically about access considerations: parking restrictions, lift availability, width of staircases (relevant for large furniture), and distance from parking to property door. These factors affect the time required and may incur additional charges if not disclosed upfront.

Moving day practicalities

Confirm all details in writing at least 48 hours before the move: start time, vehicle type and size, number of crew, parking arrangements at both ends, and the complete address including postcode. Confirm who is responsible for disconnecting and reconnecting white goods.

For valuable or fragile items, photograph them before packing — even items packed by the removal company. This provides evidence for any insurance claim if something is damaged. Keep high-value items (jewellery, documents, electronics) in your own vehicle rather than the removal van.

Leave a review on Yolist or Google after your move. Honest reviews — especially ones that mention the specific city, scale of move, and what went well or badly — are genuinely valuable for other people in the same situation.
