How business rates work in England 2024/25
Business rates are calculated by multiplying the rateable value (RV) of your property (set by the Valuation Office Agency) by the multiplier set by central government each April.
- Small business multiplier (49.9p):Applied when RV < £51,000 — saves roughly 4.7p per £1 of RV vs the large multiplier.
- SBRR: Full relief (zero rates) for RV ≤ £12,000; tapered relief between £12,001–£15,000.
- RHL Relief 2024/25: 75% off for eligible retail, hospitality and leisure premises, capped at £110,000 per business.
- Transitional relief: After the April 2023 revaluation, annual increases are capped at 5% (small), 15% (medium) and 30% (large) in year 1.
