SME definition: fewer than 500 employees AND either turnover ≤ €100M or balance sheet ≤ €86M. Sub-contracted R&D from large companies to SMEs may follow the merged scheme rules from April 2024. Always seek specialist R&D tax advice — HMRC scrutiny has increased significantly.
